Water Falls (HumanScape #1) | humanscapes
Some people see humans, some see landscapes. The members of this series are Elementals; combining two or more of the classic four elements: earth, air, fire, and water.
Years ago I created a series of near-realistic landscapes. A young woman saw one, made 'interesting' noises and left. Two days later she sought me out, saying, "All the way to my mother's house I kept thinking, why did she make the sky that colour? And then I realised -- if you hadn't I wouldn't still be thinking about it."
I enjoy the sensations of painting, and surprisingly the emotional response is the same whether I use brush and acrylic or pressure-sensitive stylus and painting software. I also enjoy watching people react to the work. They can't reject the pieces as abstract and unreal, yet they are patently not real; and so the viewers have to bring something of themselves to the work to resolve their response.
The latest development combines the techniques of my spacescapes and alien landscapes with my near-realist landscapes, and using the human form as the terrain. The emphasis varies, some like 'Fire and Air' emphasise the elements, others like 'Water Falls' are more realistic. These paintings developed into the series Mythological Creatures
, figures who have elemental hairstyles.
